Paysage avec Vaches

[Landscape with Cows]

IFF 48

etching, ca. 1910 (?), the exceptionally rare first state, on medium-heavy wove paper with good though irregular margins, a deckle edge on the left, signed and annotated by the artist "unique épreuve" in pencil, traces of localized skinning from old hinges on the verso, some faint occasional foxing and slight surface soiling especially on the reverse, otherwise in very good condition

We have never seen a similar impression of this early state on auction, or in museum collections.

P. 196x255 mm.  S.  254x310 mm.

This etching is a striking exercise in tripartite geometrical mass and texture, here in a unique impresssion before the additional aquatint.*  The landscape subject fades into an almost abstract composition following a bold diagonal structure.
